Project Information
Today, Boise stands at another crossroads, with rapid growth presenting an opportunity to create a more cohesive urban core that combats sprawl. By embracing Boise’s identity as an outdoor destination, the city aims to weave natural elements into the urban fabric, celebrating both the built environment and its surrounding landscapes.
A thoughtful approach to design is crucial for a city like Boise, where urban and natural spaces must work together seamlessly. UIO’s research on the city’s infrastructure, landmarks, and ecological systems led to the identification of five key gateways in Boise’s downtown. Each gateway reflects its own unique character, from the historic North Gateway to the creative West Gateway, the outdoor-focused East Gateway, the transit-connected South Gateway, and the cultural Central Gateway. These gateways serve as entry points to the city, creating vibrant hubs and fostering community connections.
The success of any urban core depends on the integration of anchors, moments, gateways, and trails, which connect neighborhoods, parks, and public spaces. By rethinking urban streets as active surfaces, Boise can transform its pathways into dynamic public spaces, enhancing the city’s sense of place and flow.
